4 Tips to Make Moving a Smooth Transition

April 11, 2022

Planning a move, whether from one side of Raleigh or Charlotte to the other or out of North Carolina completely, is exciting. It is the start of a new adventure. However, it may be then that you realize you have a lot of stuff!

Luckily, moving does not require you to bring every treasure that you own. Here are four tips to make your move a smooth transition that doesn't leave your new home feeling cluttered.

1. Decide What to Take

In a perfect world, everything in our home is something useful. However, in the real world, this may not be the case. Do you really need:

  • The computer that crashed three years ago that you wanted to have repaired but haven't?
  • The five bottles of ketchup that you have stored in your pantry for "what if" situations?
  • The comfortable but unsightly chair that only your pet enjoys sitting on?
  • Clothing items that your kids have outgrown or your favorite jeans that you haven't worn in years because you put on a few extra pounds?
  • The mattress on your bed that has indents where you rest?

This process will be the most time-consuming part of the move. As you go room by room, put the items that you want to take into boxes or at least their own space. This will make it easier for you to donate or recycle the stuff that is not useful in your new home.

2. Donate or Recycle Useful but Unwanted Items

Keep in mind that if you haven't used something in the last year, you likely won't need it in the new home. These items can be donated or recycled.

You may donate:

  • Old Televisions or DVDs
  • Old Toys
  • Books
  • Old or Small Appliances

Libraries can use books and DVDs and people are always looking for used appliances. You can donate this type of item and not have it cluttering up your new home.

3. Dump What's Left

If you cannot find a new home for your old items, or they're too damaged to try, you can always dump them. You can easily rent a dumpster and have it readily available to catch all the stuff your new home doesn't need.

4. Know When to Ask For Help

  • What items can I donate or recycle before moving?

Many items can be donated or recycled instead of taking up space in your new home. Consider donating old televisions, DVDs, toys, books, and small appliances. Libraries often welcome books and DVDs, while many charities accept used appliances and toys. Recycling centers can handle electronics and other materials, ensuring that these items are responsibly repurposed.

  • What should I do with items that can't be donated or recycled?

For items that are too damaged or simply not reusable, renting a dumpster is an efficient solution. This allows you to dispose of unwanted items quickly and conveniently, keeping your new home free from unnecessary clutter. Count Junkula offers dumpster rental services to make this process even easier.

  • How do I decide what to take with me when moving?

Deciding what to take can be challenging. A good rule of thumb is to evaluate the usefulness of each item. Ask yourself if you've used it in the past year, if it's in good condition, or if it holds significant sentimental value. This includes everything from furniture and clothing to appliances and pantry items. By sorting your belongings room by room, you can easily identify what to keep, donate, or discard.
